17th February – Microbiome of the Skin – Prof Andrew McBain

17th February 2025

Andrew’s presentation will begin with an overview of the microbial world, highlighting the vast number of microorganisms that exist in the human and external environment, and their diverse activities, many of which are beneficial.

It will then consider the microbiome of human skin—the community of microbes that live on the skin and interact with its environment. These microbes contribute to skin function in various ways, including interactions with the immune system and the skin barrier.

The presentation will consider factors that can influence the skin microbiome, including external elements such as cleansing and environmental exposure, as well as internal factors like ageing. It will explore how these influences shape microbial diversity and composition over time.

Finally, Andrew will introduce some of the ways in which the skin microbiome is being studied and discuss approaches being explored to better understand its role in skin health. It will also briefly consider emerging ideas around microbiome-based interventions and the potential implications for skincare and health research.
